Atomfall developer Rebellion confirms its acclaimed British survival game became immediately profitable upon release, despite approximately 2 million players accessing it through Xbox Game Pass rather than purchasing outright.
While Rebellion hasn't disclosed specific sales figures for Atomfall - which launched March 27, 2025 across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S - the studio highlights this represents their biggest player base ever for a launch title.
Speaking with The Game Business, Rebellion confirmed the post-apocalyptic northern England simulator has already recouped its development costs. The studio is now exploring potential sequels and spin-offs while continuing post-launch support and DLC development.
In an earlier GamesIndustry.biz interview, Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley explained Atomfall's Game Pass inclusion successfully avoided sales cannibalization concerns: "What you gain from that cost is disproportionate," noting Microsoft guarantees baseline revenue to mitigate risk.

Kingsley emphasized Game Pass's marketing benefits: "The subscription model drives discovery - players try it, enjoy it, then recommend it across social platforms. Even non-subscribers hearing recommendations may purchase outright."
While Microsoft maintains confidentiality regarding developer agreements, Atomfall's success clearly benefits both Rebellion and Microsoft's subscription ecosystem. Though Microsoft's latest reported Game Pass subscriber count (34 million as of February 2024) remains outdated.
IGN's Atomfall review praised it as "a gripping survival-action adventure that innovatively blends the best elements of Fallout and Elden Ring into a compelling original experience."
